On 28 March, the Fourth “BOX10 Shenzhen 10 People • Space Design Award” Ceremony cum New Book Release of Winning Work Collection was staged in Shenzhen University. Students from School of Architecture of China Central Academy of Fine Arts, College of Art and Design of Shenzhen University, College of Art and Design of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, School of Architecture and Art Design of Hebei University of Technology and College of Design Art of Shenyang Jianzhu University handed in their works showing how they understand the competition theme of “soil, wood, brick, tile and stone” from different perspectives. At last, nine works caught the eye of the 10 reviewers and got awarded.
Release of Shenzhen City Aesthetics of Modern Weekly cum Urban Elite Salon was held on 26/F of China Merchants Plaza on 19 July. Famous city experts, media editors and fashion and lifestyle pioneers in Shenzhen discussed with the team of Modern Weekly about the urban life aesthetics unique to Shenzhen in the respect of innovation, design and ecology.
Mr. Yu Qiang gave a speech themed on Urban Life Aesthetics and Lifestyle Research from the standpoints of space design and lifestyle. Such research “is based on humanity, rooted in life and accomplished through design”. Though different people enjoy different lifestyles, the beauty of the colorful urban life is the same. Urban life improvement is essentially keeping meeting people’s pursuit for life pleasure, which includes safety, comfort, convenience, freedom, advancement, etc., and the transition from material design to spirit design is an important way to realize this improvement. Mr. Yu believes an urban life full of design wisdom is beautiful.
On 7 March, British talented designer Tom Dixon, at the invitation of YuQiang & Partners and P.P. Design Gallery, held a sharing salon themed on “The Rise of the One-Man-Brand” in Shenzhen to share his experience in design inspiration and innovation and personal brand building with 100-odd designers from Shenzhen creative design circles.
The 10th anniversary celebration of Shenzhen Association of Interior Designers was held in St. Regis, Jingji 100 Building, Shenzhen on 26 June. The activity, centered on “Change of China’s Design during 2004-2014”, looked back over the development of Shenzhen’s interior design during the past decade and commended designers and representatives of the industry. Mr. Yu Qiang, design director of YuQiang & Partners, won “Industry’s Distinguished Contribution Award”.

On 12 December 2014, the “Watch • Peaceful Life Space – Tour of Smart Home Imagination of Designers” co-sponsored by OBJEKT International China and the global specialist in energy management Schneider Electric in Shenzhen invited pioneering design creators from the interior design, architectural design and real estate industries to provide a dream view of peaceful life, so as to reshape the exuberant vitality of smart home industry by creating brand-new concepts with the help of other industries.
Design Director Yu Qiang gave a speech themed on Creating for Life. He said it is the essence of design to move people and life around you through design. In his view, future technology should serve the affection demand. For future design, only when space structure and intended use are integrated perfectly can space become a real scene of life rather than a hollw stack of objects.
Committed to awarding design works with an eye over media, the 12th (2014) Modern Decoration International Media Award unveiled in St. Regis, Shenzhen on 7 December. “P.P. Design Gallery”, the work of YuQiang & Partners, won “Annual Commercial Space Award” together with the Tokyo-based “Issey Miyake” Reality Lab and new Camper store in Lyon, France.
As an important design event in the Asia Pacific Region, the media award attracted a large number of design elites, government leaders, developer representatives, representatives of large hotel management groups, government representatives, noted public figures, artists, representatives of colleges and universities and media elites to witness the historic moment.
The 14th Generation All-new Crown (Toyota’s flagship auto type) debuted at Guangzhou Auto Show the other day, drawing much attention from the media and the public with its extraordinary design. On 20-21 November, All-new Crown design salon themed on “taste change” was held in Taigucang, Guangzhou. At the salon, Mr. Yu Qiang, design director of YuQiang & Partners, demonstrated his cross-boundary design works and shared his story behind creative design with Akira Akiyama (chief engineer of All-new Crown) and Jiang Jun (general manager of FAW Toyota).
At the artistic salon in Taigucang, Mr. Yu and his team brought the audience a fantastic feeling with their space design show themed on “dreamlike space”. Five scenes were displayed, each with a specific theme. The white box symbolized a beautiful dream, the blue one implied natural joy, the black one was a symbol of mysterious art, and … Behind them were Mr. Yu Qiang’s exploration and thinking in the spiritual realm and people’s desire for an ideal life.
At the advent of the era of modern city aesthetics, art is no more caviar to the general. It has become a common concern of the real estate circle, design circle and the government with a strong sense of social responsibility and even the whole society. Shuiwan 1979 Contemporary Center, the first sales center themed on art gallery in Shenzhen, has recently become popular in the city. Due to its specific social meaning, Shuiwan 1979 Project aiming at “artistic community” is the most representative and inspiring case in the real estate circle.
A successful artistic real estate project needs close cooperation and bold and useful attempt of developers, design agencies and artists. On 23 September, at the city aesthetics experience sharing salon held by Shuiwan 1979 Contemporary Center, representatives from the three sectors were invited to share experience and discuss the social value of city aesthetics practice and the social meaning and feasibility of design and art combination.
Luo Lei (managing director of Shenzhen Chengpin Property Limited – developer of Shuiwan 1979 Project), Zhang Dali (a cross-boundary designer and artist), Yu Qiang (design director of YuQiang & Partners) and Mao Hua (chief designer of Shuiwan 1979 Contemporary Center and design director of YuQiang & Partners) shared their insights on art, design and life, and discussed with 80-plus guests from the real estate circle, design circle and mainstream media regarding the social meaning, feasibility and possible difficulties of the artistic real estate project.
Although the feast was over, the music still lingered in the yard and the light moved from upstairs to downstairs. On 4 September, Yousheng Yard of Red Trees held the marketing center opening and product launching ceremony. Mr. Yu Qiang, design director of YuQiang & Partners (a cooperative design unit of the marketing center and sample houses of Yard of Red Trees), was invited to attend the activity. On that night, Mr. Yu Qiang, together with Deng Kangyan (a famous documentary filmmaker), Liang Erping (deputy editor-in-chief of Shenzhen Evening News and designated researcher of navigational chart of China), Dai Yun (a famous artist of sculpture and director of Art Department of Shenzhen Center for Public Art), and Wang Shitai (a senior real estate critic and senior urban culture scholar), “regained yard memory” and discussed how to realize yard life in cities.
In 2014, we formally entered into a strategic partnership with Greek Zege Architects on new ideas for the boutique hotel market in China. On 9 May, Mr. Yu Qiang and Ms. Mao Hua (design directors of our company), together with Ms. Eleni Georgiadi (one of the founders of Greek Zege Architects), shared their insights on boutique hotel with friends from real estate, hotel investment, design and media circles. Mr. Constantin Cakioussis, Consul General of Greece in Guangzhou, attended the exchange activity as a special guest. He expressed congratulations on the cooperation between the design agency from Greece and the famous design agency from China and hoped the two sides could make joint efforts to produce excellent design works for Chinese markets.
On 17 August, Mr. Yu Qiang, design director of YuQiang & Partners, was invited by Patrick Leung as the keynote speaker of academic lecture of “PAL’S Club”. Mr. Yu first presented his view on design: “Design is a means of helping people realize good life. The goal of design is life, and our design also centers on life.”Later, from the four aspects “residence life”, “hotel life”, “office life” and “design gallery”, he shared his experience in design, namely: “Life is interlinked, so is design. When we learn to recognize life, we can do many designs, more valuable designs.” During the interaction, he talked about the positioning and development of young designers with the audience, and presented nice gifts from “P.P. Design Gallery” (a branch under YuQiang & Partners) to the two best questioners.
The “Second CIID China Furnishing Art Forum and Furnishing Artistic Works Exhibition in 2013”, co-sponsored by Hangzhou Yuhang District People’s Government and China Institute of Interior Design (CIID), dropped the curtain in China brand fabric headquarter base in Yuhang. The forum, themed on “New Interpretation of Oriental Furnishing Art”, aimed to discuss how the time-honored and significant oriental furnishing art is understood and interpreted by the modern people today. Mr. Yu Qiang, design director of YuQiang & Partners, attended the forum as a guest speaker and delivered a speech themed on “classic temptation”.
On 23 October 2012, the press conference of “Shenzhen 10 interior designers’ contribution to their school and design competition” was held in No. 3 lecture hall of Shenzhen University Science and Technology Building. Ten famous interior designers in Shenzhen (Yu Qiang, Li Yizhong, Chen Ying, Qin Yueming, Lin Wenge, Chen Houfu, Hong Zhongxuan and Zhou Ji, etc.) pooled RMB 100,000 for prizes for a design competition they held together with College of Art Design, Shenzhen University, to reward excellent and creative students majoring in interior design, as well as students from poor families.
“Shenzhen 10 People” refer to 10 excellent young interior designers in Shenzhen. They got together voluntarily from 2004 and often held internal and external academic exchanges activities and studies at home and abroad. In the industry, they are known as “10 interior designers in Shenzhen”. For more than 10 years, they have been active and widely recognized in Shenzhen or national architectural decoration circles. Their works cover hotels, offices, clubs, recreational spaces, properties and model houses.
The six-month long 2011 “experiment teaching by 4 supervisors from 4 universities” recently produced fruitful results: Album Infinite Territory – 2011 Experiment Teaching of Environmental Art Specialty Graduation Design by 4 Supervisors from 4 Universities. The album, which was published by China Architecture & Building Press, aroused wide concern in the education of design in China. The book Infinite Territory recorded the whole process of the experiment teaching, from the setup of the research group, to every touring guidance, designers’ lectures and their dialog with the students, and finally the presentation of teaching results, and each supervisor’s words and speech.
The “2010 Experiment Teaching of Environmental Art Specialty Graduation Design by 4 Supervisors from 4 Universities and Quality Designer Award by ciid.com.cn” jointly held by School of Architecture of China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, College of Art and Design of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, and ciid.com.cn, is a positive exploration of modern Chinese universities in the education of design. It drew continuous attention in various design schools and interior design industry in China in six months, and Breaking Down the Barrier 2010 Experiment Teaching of Environmental Art Specialty Graduation Design by 4 Supervisors from 4 Universities was published. Top ten designers in Shenzhen, Yu Qiang, Li Yizhong, He Xiaoning, Jiang Feng, Hong Zhongxuan, Yang Bangsheng, Chen Houfu, Qin Yueming, Ju Bin and Lin Wenge, were engaged as design practice supervisors. They set questions and the students competed their graduation design works under the guidance of the supervisor group.
Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year Award was acclaimed as “The Oscar of the interior design world” by the Sunday Times and the Time, and the award-winning works or yearbook of each year is cherished as the “Bible of interior design”. Works of YuQiang & Partners was nominated for the 2010 Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year Award.
